The year of 2020 presented many obstacles. COVID-19 pushed many citizens to leave the office and work from home. Although working from home sounds to many like a dream, it also presented many struggles. Not knowing when it is okay to leave the computer to spend time with family, or to end calls can be hard for some. I remember when I was working at my internship this past summer, many employees expressed that they were working extra hours because they became so involved in their screens. Often, by sitting behind a screen, people are unsure when it is or is not okay to get up and make a meal or take a walk.
After taking several semesters online and speaking with people who have been working from home, I have several suggestions on how to successfully navigate working from home.

1.Make a Schedule
Make a daily schedule to mark when your workday begins and starts. Of course, there may be calls you may have to take later or before, but it is important to recognize when your core work hours are. This will help you understand when it is okay to take a break from your computer and put down the phone. Making a schedule will also help you feel organized and productive.

2. Talk to People
Friends, family, and co-workers are all in the same boat as you as well when working from home. Take the time to talk to them if you are stressed and hear how they are navigating working from home. You can gain a lot of comfort by speaking to others that relate to you, and they might even have suggestions. If you find you are working overtime the majority of days, speak to your boss about any concerns you might have.

3. Take Time for Yourself
Think about it. You are sitting all day at a desk where you are either on a screen or on your phone. You might even have a family to take care of in the room next door. Sooner or later you realize you did not even think to ask yourself that day “how am I?” When working from home it is absolutely crucial that you dedicate a portion of time for your physical and mental health. Take breaks throughout your day to relax your eyes from a screen. Take a walk to benefit your body. You can even dedicate just 10 minutes to a quick meditation. These are all methods to help you take a break, relax your mind, and benefit yourself.
